Saw the rudder today

Got the boat out of the water today, and got my first good look at the rudder. All I can say is it was probably luck that I didn't loose it completely. It looks like it is completely torn loose from the rudder post. Best guess is what steering there was, was from the internal rods hitting the exterior shell. But the good news is the post doesn't appear to be bent, and don't think it's going to be an extremely difficult fix. Of course, I have been wrong once or twice. Hopefully I will get far enough along tomorrow to find all the damage.

Good to know that it won't be too bad.. Is that the hull side that has the hole woggled out?

Yeah Kloudie,
It is at the hull side, ( top) of the rudder. There are three 1/2" stainless rods in there, that fit through holes drilled in the post. All three have pulled back, out of one hole, and now kind of wiggle around in the other hole. Thought about replacing the whole works, but called Foss Foam and they estimate 2200 bucks. Just not in the budget at this time. With all that is going on I am not going to spend money if I can help it.

spoke with phil today--seems the pic didnt show all the damage-yipes--we did really good--got the boat home for repairs....will see how it goes---got lots of work to fix the results of our adventures......

hi phillip, any new pics. of the damage? logged on another site to see the full veiw of the rudder on a seidleman. the stainless rods you spoke of, do they distribute the load to the blade? are there more rods further down? good chance they are bent but not broke. looks to me the blade broke loose from the shaft at top. removeing the rods and replaceing them to the shaft would require agressive grinding into the blade. hopefully they are threaded into the shaft, not welded.
a repair without these rods connected would be futile. can you turn the wheel and tell where the center of the damage is? the top edge of the rudder shouldn't be parallel with the center line of the hull. the front edge should be parallel with the post thru the swing.really need more pics; cables, bellcranks, etc.
any chance of getting a diaghram of the assembly from seidleman? good luck and keep us posted.. jimbob
