Wouldn’t a thin sheet of plastic be better than glass. You could put it away when through marking the map. Less chance of breakage.

Maybe. Probably depends on the plastic. If you wanted to use a "dry erase" marker on the map, you would need a cover material that would wipe clean. Some plastics would leave a "shadow".
