The carpet-like material on my 23' O'Day on the interior side of the hull looks bad and needs to be replaced. Does anyone have advice on how to get the old stuff off and then what to use to glue new replacement carpet in place? Many thanks.

Going through the same thing with our 35 year old Beneteau. The best I've found was from an automotive fabric place in town here. Headliner material and vinyls work for cars and boats and the spray glues are great.
I just pulled the old stuff off and used a scraper for what was left on.

I'd make sure your boat is leak free before putting fabric back in. If I needed to do this on my 25 I'd use a non-fabric option like plastic wood or I've seen others use vinyl wood planks from a Home Depot.

Tear off outer layer by hand. Scrap off foam and glue residual with a scraper and orbital sander. Use an acetone cleaner and wash down to clean walls.
Also, use a shop vac connected to orbital sander and be sure to wear a respirator.
Sailrite has a replacement vinyl with a 1/4 inch foam backing and recommend a 3M spray glue. You can order color samples, also check Amazon for cheaper price.

I concur with John Tubb with respect to making sure you are not getting water penetration prior to installing replacement material, particularly fabric. If existing fabric shows evidence of water staining, you are most likely getting leakage at the hull deck joint.

I spilled some diesel on the vinyl stuff in my Hunter 280 a few years ago. I cut the stuff out to try and rid the boat of the smell of fuel....sort of a compulsive action....later wanted to sell the boat, but thought the big “hole” in the covering might be an issue.

Bought some outdoor carpet at our local lumber yard, and some spray adhesive....

Told the buyer why the rear berth walls were covered in something different...he was ok with it and I sold the boat.

Use Easy Off oven cleaner non fuming. It comes in a pump spray bottle. Spray it on wait ten minutes and then use a single sided razor like scraping a car registration sticker. It's time consuming and laborious but you will get 98% of the material and glue. It will be ready for any treatment you want to use afterwards for finishing. It actually looks good unfinished. Good luck
