Look for...

I agree with Frank. It does not matter what configuration the rig is. any failor is likely to cause a demasting. Some things to look for... change in tension. Missing carterpins--do NOT use those circle clips! Lines grab them ant pull themthrough with out you even noticing. It happened to me. Crackes in turnbuckles. Look for seperation at the deck mount-spliting caulk. Rotted bulk wood at the chain plates. thake the plates off one day. It may look fine around the plate, but a small water leak could continuously may develop rot in that area. Mounting screws that have heads that are not flat to the hard ware. Streching bolts. Replace shroud or stay if even one strand of cable is spliting off. It is not very expensive. Rusted connections. Oxodization at any rivit or mating surface. Good luck. Mark G.

Makeshift Backstay

On a recent trip to Atlantic City with 15-20kts at our back, I had up reefed main and partly-furled jib. Gusty conditions and the weight of the partly-furled jib on the headstay lead to oscillations of the headstay and pumping of the mast. Since the main was most of the way out, the mainsheet wasn't helping much to stabilize. I could have furled the jib all the way up, but the "Jack Aubrey" in me led me to disconnect the topping lift from the boom and lash it with some additional line to the stern cleat (2:1) and tensioned it up. It didn't take much to stabilize the whole rig - I actually put the jib out the rest of the way & proceeded at better-than-hull speed for most of the trip. Great time overall...aside from making my donation to Mr. Trump! -Rob Tia Rain II
