Pundits and economists love these. Add your own... Uncharted waters Righting the ship On an even keel Trim your sails Wind out of your sails Prevailing winds All hands on deck In the catbird seat On the rocks Over the yardarm Take the soundings

Groaner, aka "daddy jokes"

How about Beam me up Scotty! No, I guess not. Maybe, looks like we're in for some rough sailing (alternatively rough weather).

Our favorites are: "Oh S--T" "F--K I can't believe I did that!" And, "God d-mit Steve!" I should mention that Steve is the First Mate and the DFG (Designated Fall Guy) so if anything goes wrong he gets the blame, not me, the Skipper is NEVER to blame. Larry

Loose lips

... sink ships. Dire straights. Sucking mud. Going down for the last time. Like rats leaving a sinking ship.

Try,

above board, all at sea, any port in a storm, batten down the hatches, betwixt wind and water, brought up short, chewing the fat, cut and run, deep six, between the devil and the deep blue sea, fish or cut bait, flogging a dead horse, fly by night, grease the skids, gunboat diplomacy, hell's bells, weather eye, true blue, taken down a peg or two, (our favorite) splice the main brace, slush fund, shove off, ships that pass in the night, rub salt in the wound, scraping the bottom of the barrel, pipe down, shake a leg, over a barrel, letting the cat out of the bag,

shake a leg

this refers to when some women, either wives or passengers were aboard ships and an all hands on deck was called. shake a leg ment to put a leg out from the bunk to determine if it was a female or male leg . if it was a female then they did'nt have to respond to all hands on deck call. s/v Que Pasa?

Quote from Wikipedia... The riverboatman's cry was "mark twain" or, more fully, "by the mark twain"
