POSH

Port Out Starboard Home. From the US to England,it kept you on the north side of the ship so that the sun wouldn't heat up your cabin. Not a metaphor but...how about "down the hatch" or "she has nice lines"? r.w.landau

chock-a-block

While driving and listening to Patrick Obrien novel, a great source for sailing metaphors, I realized that chock-a-block, meaning completely full was a sailing metaphor.

Long lost lyric

Thank you r.w. In "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" grandpa sings the song "POSH" while being lifted away into captivity. From childhood, I never understood what he was saying in that line - "port out, starboard home, Posh with a capital P-O-S-H, posh". Hah! The odd bits that lodge in the corners of a mind. There's a metaphor later in the song too - "at the helm"

I almost warned against that one

I knew someone was going to do the brass monkey quote and almost warned against them using it here. As cool as the "brass monkey history" is, it's not true. http://www.snopes.com/language/stories/brass.asp
