Getting the dogs on board

Can be a challenge some times. We took an unexpected detour on our last cruise when we encountered a log that bent our rudder stock. We ended up spending two days on the hard in Maple Bay. Here's a shot of the canine crew members getting ready to disem bark.

Hey! is that a CAT-amaran?

While we have some of Belmont relaxing on board this one is still my favorite.

I'll bring the dawg if Kelli's happier.....

......soooo the dog occasionally comes with us. They both look pretty happy here. She really enjoys the whole affair as long as she's the center of attention.....the dog that is;).

Miss Gretchen

Well Miss Gretchen heard all this talk and asked why here picture wasn't in here. So here she is. She's a 7 yr old Golden Retriever that just loves the boat, knows when I tell her to "sit tight" to get low and stay put and just how to have a good time out sailing.

In charge of the poop deck...

This is our dog Annie, 2 year old Golden...Love's the boat...so much in fact, we have to spell b-o-a-t around the house, 'cause if she hear's it, she goes bonkers. Can't imagine sailing without her. Though, getting her to shore in the dinghy before she jumps out and trys to swim herself has always been tough to do.

Doing their business

We've taken our dogs on a couple of trips on the boat. One issue: They will not do their business on the boat; we have to ferry them to shore. At home, outside of their walks, we let them out into our (fenced) front yard which has a bark-like ground cover. So what I tried was to get a piece of outdoor carpet and put some of this same ground cover over it, and I laid that on the foredeck. My thought was that this would be something familiar for them, but it didn't work. Then I tried what I'd read somebody else did: I peed on it with them standing there, thinking this might set an example. That didn't work either.

I suppose I could just wait them out, but it makes me uncomfortable.

I understand that many dog owners have this same problem. Has anybody developed any successful methods for this?

On command

Although We have never needed for Shamus to "go" on board(he can go about 14 hrs), we have trained him to go on command. "Business" is #1, "Toofer" is, well you can probably guess.

Shelby loves sailing ...

when we say the word "boat" around the house, she parks herself at the door to make sure we don't leave without her!

She doesn't like going down the companionway ...

We haven't figured this out yet. She will climb the vertical ladder up the stern to get in the boat completely on her own and will do it repeatedly, as often as anybody will throw a tennis ball in the water. She also jumps off the boat from the ladder quite easily.

But she won't go up and down the companionway without help. *o

We had the same problem with Shamus until we affixed some carpet treads to the steps. We also used some kibble at dinner time to coax him into using it the first few times. Now he goes up and down without any problems.

Papillon's make great boat dogs

Daisy Mae and Dabber Doo are great boat dogs.....they pitch a tisy if we try to go boating without them.

Skippy hates sailing.....

....but he doesn't have a choice. We (I) also have to dinghy him ashore for "shore leave". When we first got him I said I'd just hold him over the side and squeeze him. They won't let me try that.

On our recent trip to NYC we did an overnighter up the Jersey coast. I tried to get him to pee on a welcome mat but he wouldn't go for it. I tried to get him to do this at home a few weeks before we left. I tried all the usual stuff, I peed on it, I sprayed a product called "Wee Wee" on it. He just never warmed up to the idea. He held it for 19.5 hrs.

He does love his dinghy though. If it drifts close to the swim platform at anchor he'll jump in.

No pic but

I don't have a pic, but I do have a boat pet. His name is Skipper, and he is a Geko. Maybe kin the the Geico Geko. He moved aboard a couple of months ago, and seems to like it. Either that, or he can't find his way off. The advantages are no bathroom issues to worry about, I don't have to feed or water. And of course he eats bugs.
