my dog

Hey, how did you get my dog, Santa, onto your boat without my knowing it? And please don't deny it. This looks almost exactly like him and it is certainly his exact pose on the boat, no matter how rough it gets.

Jim, Shamus loves cats

He thinks they are yummy ;-).

He was fostered with a cat so he gets along with them fine although when they run it becomes a fun game for him and not so fun for the cat!

Hey guys, _please_ upload some of these to the owner photo album. That's our source for photos for the Monday Mail -- I'd sure like to use some of these.

Axl the fearless navigator

This is Axl, he loves to sail... as long as he doesn't have to go swimmming and there's plenty of water and ice!

Cheers,

To: Tim R from Portland..

It must have been a really tough day sailing. Your Lab looks pooped! I have to laugh (and feel a bit sad too) when I see your picture. I lost my Lab last yr after 12+ years. Very loyal companion and a real lover. Also raised with a cat, and the cat was the "alpha" in our house. I have some photos of our lab in out cockpit "dead to the world" asleep like yours too, back a few years ago. Thanks for sharing.

Bob.

how old was your dog

when you first brought them on board. i just got my first boat and i brought my 9yr old yellow lab on board at the marina. in the cockpit she was shaking she was so scared. i think because it's slippery on the fiberglass. down below she was a bit better on the carpet with more traction. i'd like to get her used to it so we don't have to leave her at home all the time. the third time i brought her down, i had to chase her down the dock once she saw i was going to bring her aboard. do they eventually get used to it or do you think she is too old?

Dog Whisperer

Wchevron: Get some dvd's of the Dog Whisperer show (available at Netflix, among other places). The guy who does the show, Cesar Milan, has some interesting techniques to help dogs get over phobias. According to him, age doesn't matter; dogs live day-to-day.

Our dogs were about four and two when we first took them on a boat. The older one - a lab mix - thinks it's just a car with one big window to look out of, or sleeps. The other gets a little nervous when the seas get choppy.

Treats help a lot

We used them to get Shamus on board and comfortable when he was less than a year. After a winter, he jumped aboard like it was his favorite place.

Dog afraid of your boat...could be worse.

One of my dogs is afraid of the house I built for us. I can calm him down by taking him to the boat when it's too windy in the house. We just got back from a month of cruising with all hands (and paws) and he never looked better. All of the fur he licked off here at home grew back and he didn't chew his feet for a month so he could go for long walks on shore.

We've been home for two days now. The first day home we had 15 knot winds which is not bad here on the windy side of Whidbey Island. He didn't mind it on the boat with waves and noise but he started getting stressed out when we got back on shore. Today the winds were light so no problem until about 30 minutes ago when he sat up and started looking afraid...the winds got here about 15 minutes later.

When I say Heel I Mean HEEL !!!

Schatzi, in her favorite spot... keeping an eye on the trim and barking orders......
She is the only 'person' on board with a nose for those subtle wind shifts.
