• Sailing is all about the Weather.

Big into the exploration of Atlantic Hurricanes since Katrina came uninvited into his world, James (Jim) Gurley (JamesG161) has followed every Tropical Storm birthed in Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean waters since. Being a boater, he knows that we often need more time to prepare than we get from the TV weather folk. Jim relies on the science of storm development to share early warning info with friends and fellow boaters.

Early in 2018, Jim and John Shepard, (JSSailem) started to chat about the weather data available. John asked Jim to help forecast Pacific NW storms, and this morphed into discussions on weather forecasting.

For John, sailing in the PNW is sometimes hit and miss. One day is ugly, then a string of beautiful days but no wind, followed by a series of blue-sky days and 12 knot breezes. Being ready for those great sailing days means you need to look to the Pacific Ocean and what is brewing. John has been into Pacific NW Weather since the 1970’s when his first PNW November storm hit bringing more than 40 days and 40 nights of continual rain.

Together we want to share information, new APPs, safety, and thoughts about letting the weather help you. Identify some of the resources for sailors and help prepare you for your next sailboat outing.

It is far better to go out on the water knowing what to expect in weather terms, than to be out on the water and see dark ominous clouds suddenly appear, unprepared.

Musetta is the muse of @dLj . She came into David's life after a disappointing Florida Keys adventure looking for his retirement boat. About 3 weeks after the Florida trip his brother calls up and says... "I think I found your boat. It is a couple of hours away, want to go look?"

I heard it was love first sight.

Musetta left Gibson Island MD 02 JUL 2023 19:24 UTC TO begin her journey across the Atlantic.

Her current position is off the coast of NJ having rounded Cape May about 18:54 UTC
20:20 UTC 03JUL2023.

Follow along as Musetta crosses the Atlantic in route to some great ports of call.
Current Destination is Lunenburg NS.

Tks for doing this, John
Don't forget me

This started months ago in a Private Message to me about printing some real Navigational Charts.

@jssailem told @dLj I owned a 42" large HP DesignJet Printer.:biggrin:

I could not find a PDF file to Print the North Atlantic Charts needed.

But I did find the right PDF Charts and dJ bought them for $29 each.

Now he can do his plot navigation by hand.
Hopefully he has a sextant and a ships clock too.

John has the right things to plot his course, soon maybe me too.

Ok Here is what I know from chatting with Dave. about an hour ago.
They are straight through to Lunenburg NS. The storms that were in the Atlantic City area were avoided by bearing more easterly. They can pick up the westerly edge of the Gulf current about 30nm off the NJ Coast. The winds according to Windy were more favorable.

There position at 22:22UTC 04Jul2023 is 39º 48.0720' N. 071º 46.414' W

Since leaving Cape May at 17:12 on the 3rd July they have traveled a distance of 162NM in about 29 hours. an average of 5.58 knots.
They have approximately 480nm to their planned port of call another 86 hours at this pace.

We took a squadron of Navy 44s on a "Not Halifax" cruise while I was teaching at the Naval Academy. Called it that because we got becalmed in Georges Bank. Turned the squadron around and motored to P-Town to refuel and spent the night. Then we went through the Cape Cod canal and spent the weekend in Newport RI.
