Long day……. Yes I’m in Mt Sinai harbor to his east right now. Very rough. Is he anchored or did he grab a mooring?
I actually think he's anchored.

If he’s in the west anchorage he can just pick up any mooring. Nobody is going out there.

Any mooring for that matter……. The cove on the east side is well protected and plenty of available moorings

I'll let him know. I have a feeling it may be too windy for him to get back out to his boat to move it. Thanks for the info. I'll pass it on.

Hey,

It would be helpful to say what day it was when he makes a video. it's hard to tell when and where he is.

I don't mean to be rude, but I question his decision making. Planning on going around Cape Cod instead of the canal was a poor choice. Fortunately he discussed it with the people at Plymouth and made a better choice. He stated that he wanted to sail from Montauk to New Haven - why would you cross the LI Sound to the CT side when you could sail much less distance by staying on the Long Island side? Guy also seems to be making very slow progress. The weather for NY and NJ is only going to get worse....

I wish him good luck.

How did he fair last night..... wind was blowing hard all night!
He is on anchor at Port Jefferson. He may not be sailing until Wednesday or Thursday with the higher winds but it's day to day. Staging for the east river ebb tide will happen at Little Neck inlet. Tide may be around 940am. I'm told he can ride the tide down through the east river.

They have free town moorings available and very good access via dinghy to grocery store. They do have a launch service but not sure when they stop running.

He really has no choice. His boat is too small and slow to go against the tide. Even going with the tide expect a wild and bumpy ride in such a small boat.

Speaking of winds. It looks like the remnants of Ian is backing of the coast and stirring stuff up again in the Mid Atlantic....
Coastal flood warnings in Hampton Roads VA. It wasn't good the first time and the leftovers ain't any better.

It's a lot better than going against the current!
But he'll need some speed over and above the current to maintain steerage. He'll need his motor if there's not a tailwind. Maybe both. I hope I'm not being patronizing but a drift down the East river like a river raft would be dangerous. Very soon after Hell's Gate he needs to get to the proper side of Roosevelt Island. Get swept to the wrong side costs his mast (Although a Typhoon may slip under). He'll need an anchor ready to deploy in 30' of water in case he is headed to a hazard (Like a bridge abutment, commercial tow, dilapidated pier or even a pier in good condition). I'd suggest in a laundry basket near the helm carefully flaked (Not coiled). VHF radio in hand to communicate with other traffic, horn just as close. He'll be busy.

Manhasset Bay is also another good staging point popular with boaters waiting for the tide window through Hell Gate.
I'll second that. He can get a free mooring ball convenient to everything that he may need in Port Washington. It's easily close enough to the East River to run the whole thing down-current thru the Verrazzano all the way to Sandy Hook in a relatively easy day. I don't know for sure, but I think access to any facilities that he may need is much more convenient in Manhasset Bay/Port Washington than Little Egg Inlet, which looks like there isn't much there.

Guy has passed through Hell Gate and headed toward Sandy Hook. Any suggestions for safe anchorage /mooring nearby Sandy Hook?

Well I'm late for that but we need an adrenaline check from Guy. You go thru the East river like "..Crap through a Goose.." but it's always memorable. Hope he is relaxing tonight.

The "Sonnet" and Captain Fiero departed Sandy Hook this morning. Can anybody recommend a cheap(Read free) mooring or tie up that might have a landing close by and possibly somewhere to provision? He's running low and needs to restock. He rows ashore. Any help would be great!

He was up early again and on the move. He should be approaching Manasquan Inlet around 2pm if all goes well. He is looking for ideas to grab a mooring near a landing that may have a grocery nearby. He needs to restock. Any help greatly appreciated.

Will he be going through the Point Pleasant Canal and Barnegat Bay past Manasquan, or back offshore for most of NJ? For a boat that size I would think the inside would be better at least to AC, especially if he’s hoping for places to provision. I can’t think of or imagine any especially cheap places, but there should be some places to stop along the way and maybe Uber to a market.

Hello @palcuz !

I hope the journey is going well. Today was a very pleasant day but wind was southerly today, I believe (10 to 15 knots from southwest at our marina in Barnegat). I sailed yesterday (Saturday) with a WNW wind and it was fantastic. It would have been excellent for him getting to Sandy Hook on Saturday. If he anchored near the Coast Guard Station at the end of the hook, it would have avoided a lot of mileage from Atlantic Highlands to get around the hook. Hopefully he was able to do that.

With the southerly wind, it might have been difficult to get to Manasquan Inlet today. If he made it, I imagine finding an anchorage might have been difficult. I'm not familiar with any of the facilities or stores in that area.

If he is traveling south tomorrow from Manasquan Inlet (and if he is taking the canal), I recommend that he make it past Toms River and anchor in the bay at John C. Bartlett County Park. It is at the entrance to Cedar Creek and the town is known as Lanoka Harbor. The anchorage is just to the north (he wouldn't actually enter Cedar Creek). If he takes a chance and enters Cedar Creek, he can look for Cedar Creek Sailing Center on the north side of the creek, a little ways inside. I think they are friendly folks there and may help him out for provisioning.

Another option is get to Forked River, which is marked with a day marker out front. If he bears right when inside, taking the north fork and goes all the way to the end, he can probably find space at Forked River State Marina, which is right on Rte 9. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with any nearby grocery stores for provisioning. But there are plenty of restaurants in that area.

The next option south is in Waretown. There is Key Marina, but it is far from any provisioning stores and probably very expensive. The best locations to make a provisioning run is at either South Harbor or North Harbor. There are marinas but I'm not sure about depth. He probably is shallow enough depth to make it inside. If he can get there, he could probably walk to the Waretown Shoprite on Route 9. It's a great grocery store and I go in there all the time for provisioning. Obviously, I drive there. But it is on Route 9 close enough to that location.

The closest anchoring is in front of Conklin Island, which is right out front of out marina. at Mariners and Sun Harbor. It is excellent holding and protected for a southerly wind. It won't be comfortable if there is any strong wind from the north or northwest.

Our marina is filling up and very busy right now. It is one of the places where boats come in from all around for winter storage and the slips have filled up in the past few weeks. However, there are numerous outside docks open now. I think they may be expensive for and overnight but Guy could give them a call to find out for sure. The number is 609-698-1222. I'd bet he could find somebody to help him with provisioning from there. It won't be in walking distance.

From Mariners (or Conklin Island), it can be a relatively easy, very scenic, and safe trip thru the NJICW all the way to Atlantic City if he is with the tide for most of the way. If he has to spend any significant time against the tide, it will be a very long day or he may need to find a place to anchor along the way.

Hope that helps! Let us know the current status!
