J,

Was that necessary man? You are something else........
Well, I DID have a smiley on it....

But consider that an apparently well-found sailboat with 8 people on board motorsails into a 60,000 ton warship that has been moored in the exact same place for 14 years on a clear sunny day in moderate conditions, and your comment is 'The captain should have had a better watch & allowed plenty of separation space'.

That DID seem kind of obvious to me. If it did not to you, I'm sorry for my comment.

Unless it was a mark on the course. Then only one turn (tack+jibe). But how to you count tacks and jibes with the rig down???

gratuitously stolen from another forum
The guy for the other forum should have been a bit more careful drawing that oval. It crosses over the security booms in the water off NAS North Island. Get anywhere close to those things and you gather some very interesting company very quickly.

JD,

Didn't notice the smiley pal but, it's better to miss this than an aircraft carrier HUH?

C'mon, 8 people onboard & as the captain, he is in charge of safety for everyone....period!
AND, he failed!

Was it alcohol, or something else? OR, maybe it was just that his mast was simply
TOO HIGH & the fault was that the Navy did not make their deck high enough to
avoid sailboat masts.

Or, he negligently & simply didn't follow the Prudent Navigator rule, To keep a lookout at all times.

JD, thanks for the smiley. I was looking for a yellow happy-faced emolgi.

No worries! Indeed, like you say the real question is WHY? Did the skipper get distracted? Think the rig was below the level of the flight deck? Go below for a pee at the wrong time? Who knows? Maybe it will come out in the news.

Dam,all this serious is getting boring.

Should have screamed " Starboard" at the top of his lungs to let the other boat know he was serious

We were bored one night and lowered a line from the catwalk to the sea and it measured approx 50'. Not very scientific though, the boat was pitching.

I had these guys pull up next to me once. They saw my Marine Corps colors, smiled and moved up to the next victim. er... boat. Guess they were seeing how we would react to a boat with a bow mounted .50 cal. The .50 was manned but the gun was not loaded with a belt, and the bolt was forward in the safe position.

Great story! Was it a duce? I thought the bolt was always forward unless you were racking or after firing in single shot mode.

There is a security zone around docked naval vessels &
he's probably boating in familiar waters so,

How the Hell do you get too close to an aircraft carrier without noticing it?
Yea OK, so it has a VERY LOW freeboard but hey, it's NAVY GREY right???

Do not be surprised if his insurance company denies his claim!
They probably would........and, they should.

It's guys like this that give us sailors a BAD rap.

The insurance company will pay his claim and cancel him. This is why you need agreed value insurance on your boat - there are lots of guys like him with the potential to take your boat and leave you short.

They probably will pay. But you have to be careful. Most policies will have a disclaimer for the following; 'Deliberate acts of negligence or recklessness'

Typically in the USA that has to be fairly egregious. Lack of licencing and all that. In the UK most insurers would take a very hard look at the circumstances of that incident.

GUNNI & JD,

It's guys like this that drive our premiums up, I'm with Boat US & very happy with them.
Of course, I've never sunk a US Naval vessel before.

It's PROBABLY called, "The Pay him-n-Drop him policy."
Can't wait until he goes out for a NEW policy. $$$$
What happened after all, is public record.

Ya know, I thought the navy has circling vessels out there to insure this doesn't happen?

Can't wait for the next news clip..............Film @ 11:00

Yeah, CVN Midway is a museum so there is apparently no security patrol. You couldn’t take a rubber dinghy within 300 yards of an active warship without challenge. If you actually managed to strike one you would have to breach a buoy line and I doubt you would survive the mistake.
