They are not gone. They are almost done negotiating a reorg. All according to a friend of mine who works for Sail.

I concur with the majority. Both Sail and Cruising World have lost relevance. The same for Practical Sailor - a terrific publication, but I just can't afford most of the gear they review. i have avoided Good Old Boat because they are pricey, but if I get rid of my $10 to Sail, Cruising WD, and $20 to Practical Sailor I will more than break even.

Since we're on the subject of magazine interest, I thought some might not already know that Lattitudes and Attitudes magazine is available online. I always though it was more interesting than the rest and you can't beat the price...

one good article...

pays for a whole subscription to GOB or PS. I would have to add that DIY - boating has helped me a lot too...

If you are "on your own" out there for maintaining an old boat - these are your key information sources... even with the internet.... Information is a hierarchy...

That is what Chapter 11 Reorganization means. Chuck
I know what chapter 11 is Chuck. My point is that the process is nearly complete not just starting. That is a huge difference in this type of filing. Many reorgs fail. Again, all according to a friend who works for Sail.

As for practical sailor, as of this month it's now 20% thinner. Personally, I think that's the wrong approach

I receive "Sail" every month, read it cover to to cover, then pass it along. I agree, the publication has jumped the shark. I have Zero interest in sailboat racing and multimillion dollar megayachts, but it is their ads that pay the bills. I too subscribed when they had "Boatworks", and quite honestly subscribed to the magazine because of it. With my 30 year old boat, there are always projects that I can grab a tidbit of knowledge from.

Good Old Boat, is an awesome magazine, and truly a better fit with me and my demographic. Yes, it's a bit pricey. But like someone said in one of the previous posts, if you put one piece of information that they offer to use, you have paid for your subscription in spades. Plus, they are great to hand to a buddy at a marina that has a project that has them scratching their heads.

Yeah, I generally put down my copy of Sail thinking.... gee, maybe in 15 or 20 years I can actually AFFORD ones of those boats. I know new boats drive the ads, but it all adds up to be a bit elitist.
I'll stick with GOB, which is, after all, "for the rest of us"!

My bank just cashed (4/27/09) my $15 check for my "Sail" 2 yrs extension. So much for an unsecured creditor.

If you read the editor's letter this month you will note that "sail" is going in new direction that will make it a much more relevent magazine for sailors of our ilk. They are dispensing with exotic vacation, super luxury yacht, professional racing type of subject matter that none of us can relate to. I was totally losing interest in SAIL, preferring cruising world for it's relevence. But this month's issue is a refreshing change and I will renew my (one year, heh, heh) subscription because of it. Check it out.l

I subscribe to Practical Boat Owners (PBO), Cruising World, SAIL and Practical Sailor. PBO (British mag) is by far THE BEST ! Period. I'm dropping PS 'cos not much interest in the stuff they evaluate, keeping CW and SAIL for now to tie over period when I'm waiting for next issue of PBO.

The "new direction" is what killed off Boatworks. Hopefully they learned their lesson with that mistake.

During one of the last recessions

the Admiral of the Coast Guard, testimony to Congress, said:

"The logical extension of 'Doing more with less' is 'Doing everything with nothing.'"

The same seems to be true for magazines and newspapers these days. They print less, use more "user provided material" (like, we write their stories or they publish blog excerpts or republish old stuff), ignore actual good ideas, raise rates and then wonder why they fail.

"When will they ever learn?"

Well, I subscribe to almost all the "Big" well known Mags. Only because with my job I have time to Read...shh...don't tell the boss. As they come due they will not be renewed, except...Good Old Boat And Lats&Ats. It always gets me that they regularly ask the Question " How do we get more people into Sailing ?" WELL DA. Have someone you know that is in middle income BUT knows little about Sailing go to a magazine store and glance through one of those Mags, then ask them if they think that sailing is something they can afford ?? The people with these Mags just don't get it.
"Practical Sailor" has info I like but OMG how many issues per year do we need to hear about bottom paint, and Inflatables, and ..... Not to mention that after paying there high price you have to pay more for online access to reviews.
I used to like Lats & Atts but over the years they have gotten away from info about Cruisers doing it on the cheap and have gone more like the others...Gotta have a big boat to Cruise. When I read in an issue, A comment from Bob about not sure if they could afford that boat they are having custom built then they are way over my head.

Please don't misunderstand, I dont hold a grudge agains any person with wealth, only the Snobs and that is what a lot of these "modern" Mag's have become. If you don't have an open checkbook and buy all the "Best" stuff, then you aint in their leauge. It's hard to be profitable when you cater to the top 10-15% of income then wonder why you loose subscribers.
OK, My rant is over.
Gotta pack more stuff for our trip to bring our new to us 1975 Irwin 10/4 down from Ct. To Md.
We are leaving there this Saturday, I hope the weather gets a little better.

Happy sailing All.

48Dodge, you said, "As for practical sailor, as of this month it's now 20% thinner. Personally, I think that's the wrong approach".
I subscribe to Bus Conversions Magazine. About 4 months ago it go halved in size too. You know what...it is a much better magazine today!
For what it's worth.
Jack
PS...when I first saw it I was mad...then the next month and the next I was happier every month!

But for a magazine with no ads and it was only 40 pages long to begin with, 8 pages is a lot. I'm sadly going to let my subscription run out. Also, the excuses they gave for cutting it down irked me, too. Instead of admitting that they were cutting costs, they played it off as greener for the environment. Going "greener" is fine, but don't try to feed me a crap sandwich.
