Hi, I recently purchased an older C27 and would like to do a bit of casual racing. How do I can a sail number? Is there a register?

Sail numbers are used by Race Committees an to a lesser degree by SAR teams to identify boats.

Its very helpful if each boat has a unique number. To that end, each national sailing authority (US Sailing in the USA) can issue a 5-digit number to you. Sail Canada issues 4 digit numbers. The cost is US$100 (C$150 in Canada) to get the number. But if you also plan putting the USA 12345 on your sails, figure $10 each and you are looking at $160 just for stick-on numbers for two sails, $240 if you add a spinnaker. Not cheap. I know people that have paid less for their sails!

In the USA sail numbers are always numbers. In the UK there is often a letter suffix (GBR 5443 T)

OR. You can legally use your hull number if your boat is a recognized One Design fleet. But 99% of clubs are OK if you use ANY number, as long as it does not conflict with another number in the fleet. It does NOT have to be your hull number. Just putting a single '5' on your main sail will cost you only 20 bucks! Note: using a number that is not your hull number, like the number that came with used sails, is a great idea, until a boat with a legitimate claim to that number shows up in your PHRF fleet.

Protip: Starboard number is ALWAYS higher.
