SAIL MAGAZINE SUBSCRIBERS LEFT OUT!

Last summer about 50 boats from the Trailer Sailor Association signed up for a two-week cruise in the Canadian North Channel. For the last week of the cruise, SAIL magazine assigned a reporter, Rebecca Waters, to sail with us. She did a very nice article on the cruise in the Feb 2007 issue of SAIL. I've been told that SAIL "ran out" of copies and several subscribers I know of never got their copy. One person says this is a common occurrence. My question: I was under the impression that industry practice was to serve subscribers before distributing newsstand issues. After some reflection, I came to the conclusion that this is naive - as they already have our money. Is this a common occurrence, or a one time thing - what is your experience? Did you get your Feb 2007 issue of SAIL?

George, I think that it was Bell's Toil

that wrote that article. He sails Lake Authur. I still love Traverse City! r.w.landau

TSA Article

The article you remember was done by Wayne Bell was a couple of years ago. This latest article was just this last summer by Rebecca Waters. "Bells Toil" was there for the July cruise tho.

George, there may be a basis for a

complaint to the US postal service concerning this failure to deliver to subscribers.

me too

I got a cheap subscription to Sail in June 2006 $7.00 yr. and I've got 3 or 4 issues since June. I figure I'm on the bottom of the list when issues get low. I've E-mailed them with no response. When I had a full price subscription they were always delivered on time. I've since made other arrangements for reading material.

Ross, if they are from Traverse City,

the post man is probably stuck in a snow bank!:) I would inquire to Sail Mag before I got ruffled. r.w.landau

Not Good News

I just subscribed, but it was just $5.00. I wonder if they add the missed month to the end or if the subscription is for only as many as they want to send you in a year?

All Mags must submit an audit. Press run,

subscriptions, news stand sales, complimentary copies etc. Because advertizers pay for space according to those numbers. Check the "masthead" in each new issue and see what the printing run numbers were.

SAIL SUBSCRIPTION PRACTICES

A related matter. I'm a long term subscriber and got an offer in the mail from SAIL to renew 3 yrs for $50. Went to their website to renew and saw an offer on their site to renew for $20 for two years.

George, you are still George. You may as well post

as George instead of Sail. r.w.landau

Missed me too

I didn't get the Feb issue either. I called and they said they were out and could not replace it. They said they would extend my subscription on the back end.

New subscriber

Just subscribed myself. $15/2 years. I had originally signed up for the Boatworks magazine and also tried to subscribe to Sail, but it apparently didn't "take". Tried again later and the website subscription wasn't working so I sent them an email as it said to do on the site. They could only get me the 1 year for $12 via email. Checked back with the site and it was working, luckily.

Sail Magazine Aint What It Used To Be.

My last issue of Sail for the month of Febuary did not come either.I have a suscription to Sail for over 7 years now,non-stop.I've noted that the content of the magazine has, like the quality, has fallen off in the last couple of years.I am "Published" myself (even been in Sail once) and am to the point of giving up on them and suscribing elsewhere. Also did Boatworks when it first came out but have found DIY to be a better source of info. And,since few of us have new boats This Old Boat Magazine is likely to replace Sail when my subscription expires..if not sooner.

No Feb issue here either

I sent them email and they replied that Feb was permanently out of stock and they would extend my subscription by 1 month. I suspect they had plenty of them at the Miami show. I can't say that I blame them too much for having an excuse to not send out a missing issue because I am sure the postal charges for a single mailing are considerably nore than the bulk mailing. If I had paid $35 or more for a year subscription then I would expect different results. Bob

Content going downhill

Unfortunately, when Sail changed their format a couple of years ago, they lost a lot in the translation. I think the publihers have underestimated the overall intelligence of the sailing community, and have "dummied down" their content. A lot of us still like to read, believe it or not, and would prefer detailed articles and how-to information, rather than 90% photos and 10% text. We seem to have time to read in the winter and when we're cruising... so what's the problem? I get eyestrain trying to read publications directly off the internet, and tend to prefer an intelligently printed page including relavent pictures.
