I have been given permission to take our grandson on our boat this season!!!! I was at Defender last weekend and picked up some safety netting to attach to the life lines. Any tips on the install would be helpful. Thanks

Life Jacket and tether

Even with netting, I'd vote for a life jacket whenever he's on the boat, and a tether if he's really active. We had and still have lacings on our life lines, intended to secure racing Genoas but our assumption was it was adequate protection to keep our Black Lab on board. Not so! One breezy spring cruise she was walking around the fore deck, as she had become acustomed to over the years; she slipped and skidded BACKWARDS thru the lacings that would have otherwise held her. We had a little bit of a fire drill, but recovered her safely. After that all our dogs have worn life jackets and the younger active ones are tethered in the cockpit. Your post reminded me of getting a new lifevest for our Grandson, as he will likely be comming for visits as it warms up. Be safe!

legal requirement for minors on deck

As I understand it, it is a requirement that all kids under 13years wear a PDF when topsides, if a vessel of this class is underway.

Let him pick it out

Before my grandson came out on the boat (340) we went to the ship store and I gave him the choice of any pfd he wanted He picked "Scooby Do" Now he and it are inseparable and he insists I wear my "scooby" as well Get him engaged and the rest is easy nothing like introducing a grandson to sailing Life doesn't get much better t
