Hello again,
Here is an update for info:
A few days ago, while putting the boat into annual summer storage in Tortola, I managed to take the windlass apart. It took several hours to loosen the 2 screws holding the striper. In the vertical application which I believe is standard for the Anchorman the straight slotted screws are easily accessible. Not so for horizontal installation they are only visible by mirror, not much room and simple slot screws are the worst to apply needed torque, they will definitely be replaced by socket cap screws (lesson 1). Lesson 2 (certainly for Legend 40.5) is to fashion some false floor above the deep chain “pit”. After removing all the “above deck parts” as well as motor and gearbox the shaft was spinning easily without wobble. I was assuming the problem was in the gearbox and as I was running out of time I took it up north. Well the gearbox appears to work fine, back to square one. I will have to do better investigation once back south in November. I’ll have to check the motor, it is the replacement model from sl spares 3 years, old and the Quick contactor box.
