I replaced the thermostat today and ran the engine at 1700 rpms in forward gear at the dock for 30 minutes. It never overheated it ran about 170 degrees I left the cap off of the manifold thinking I may need to burp the engine no issue. Put the cap back on continued to run the engine no overheating. I believe draining the engine got most of the rust out. I think the thermostat had failed. Everything is good now. Leaving in two weeks for a two month trip in the Bahamas.
You've got a severe corrosion problem with your engine's AF cooling system. You've done nothing to determine what that problem is. You are now going to run the engine as if everything's fine until the block finally corrodes to the point where you have permanent damage to the engine.
