Hello everyone. I have an 1982 catalina 30. I have read all the archive articles on how to fix the "play " in the rudder post. I am leaning towards injecting the expoxy into the tube method. I was wondering if anyone has tried this? If so , any advice ? It looks like it would be easy to do for the top of the post , but not sure on the easiest method for the bottom of the post. Folks at the Catalina factory will send you detailed instruction with options to fix the rudder slop. One of the "quick fix" methods is to slip mylar shims down the rudder post. I checked with Catalina about using the clear copy paper you use in the office for over head projectors. They said it would be ok. I cut some shims, sliped them around the rudder and it has been several years now with no problems. It's a cheap, quick and easy fix.

What do you mean by "play" in the rudder
Do you mean the seepage from the top of the rudder post or actual play in the rudder. One is fixed by resealing the head of the rudder and the other is fixed by tightening the cables. I am in the process of resealing the head of mine as we speak as I have water penetration at the rudder head. (Catalina has instructions on how to do this) I would not epoxy the interior of tube as you may need access if you ever have future seepage into the rudder. Up until now I have poured antifreeze in the tube each fall to prevent winter freeze-up, but last fall I actually removed the rudder to perform the resealing procedure. Hopefully this will work. Once re-installed I will be adjusting and tightening my cables in order to reduce the "play" in my rudder as it has been throwing off my autohelm (ST4000+ - see the archives on this topic). So now you see why I ask what you mean by "Play" in your rudder. From the previous responses it seems like the respondents are talking about 2 different things. Hope this helps. JS

I was trying to give you some good advice, however was also PO'd about the links you had in your note. I spend about 10 hours two weeks ago rebuilding my computer because I was hit by a virus. Trust me it is not a pleasent experience. Advice to all...... don't let your kids download Kazaa or anything else that you don't know about. This is not intended to be a lecture but just some friendly advice. These forums are great, lets keep them that way. JS

Sorry everyone. I have been posting in other forums alot were adverts are allowed and its just a habit. There will be no more. Thank you everyone for the help. I believe i am going to try the "film" method and see what happens. The "play in the rudder " is the rudder post moving inside the rudder tube. I believe this would be fixed with the expoxy method best if i could only get the quandrant appart. I dont believe its possible without destroying it. So i am going to try and slide the film in the tube and see if it lasts. Thanks again everyone. jamie snodgrass

Film method
You may need to take the emergency tiller cap off. It's no big deal. Measure the length of the rudder tube from the top to the bottom where it breaks out near the quadrant. Cut a few pieces of film approx. the circumference of the tube and slip them in, as many as needed to take up the play. I also squirt some Teflon super lube in there to keep things smooth. It's a quick and easy fix, a lot cheaper and easier than dropping the rubber and epoxy. Good luck!

Somthing I have used is a heat shrinkable teflon tubing. It can be found at McMaster Carr and other industrial supply companies. Works great.

Bronze Shim
Had the same problem on my 79 Cat 30, I purchased a sheet of Bronze shim material from the local chandlers (comes in 8*10 sheets). I then lowered the rudder and wrapped the sheet around the rudder post before repositioning it. Worked great and certianly stoppted the wobble.
