I have a lot of water coming in around my rudder stuffing box. It is leaking in at the bottom. Is the stuuffing box suppost to be glassed to the post? Mine is turing with the shaft. It is a 86 C30 with wheel stearing.

If it turns with the rudder post then yes, it has lost it's bond with the tube. I fixed mine by taking the top ring off the stuffing box and sliding the whole thing up the tube. Cleaned it off. Transferred as much weight forward on the boat to get the water level low in the tube. I cleaned the inside of the tube with alchol to remove moisture. I coated the stuffing box with underwater expoxy and shoved it back down. The bolts on the top half should only be finger tight unless it leaks. Mine didn't. Good luck.

It's very difficult to get it glassed in with enough glass for any strength. I modified mine so as it's similar to the drive shaft stuffing box, using a piece of 3" engine hose
PYI Dripless!
First of all I don't work for PYI or anything! But I have to say that putting the dripless shaft seal on my Cat 30 was probably the best upgrade I've done on her. I too was badly in need of a repack and I decided to drop the $180 on the unit. I was too much of a wimp to do the job myself so I paid the yard about $150 to put it in. I'm glad I did as they had to get a bit creative with the glass to get it mounted!
Anyhow, it works flawlessly.....absolutely no water comes in and the bilge stays dry. I can't recommend it enough! They way I figure it, if you're repacking the stuffing box, you're halfway there anyhow...why not just replace with the dripless and never worry about it again? Steve

I have a mystery leak on my C27. The prop stuffing box seems to be dry but yet there is a leak. Questions: 1. Is rudder leaks visible in cockpit? I f not where? 2. Access to rudder stuffing box,do you take off rudder post top? 3. Can it be done in the water? 4. Any ideas about other sources of leaks? Thanks Ray
