I plan to remove the rudder from Isis next week when we haul her out
for the season. If I dont do it while the boat is suspended, is it
difficult to do while it sits on the cradle? The keel would be about 2
feet above the ground. Also what keeps the lower bronze foot assembly
tight to the hull? I noticed last spring that the bronze foot assembly
had some movement. I dont think this is normal is it? Do the bolts
just keep it in position without being tightined to the keel? Thanks ,

HI Colin

I will be doing the same to Southern Comfort this winter. You need at least
three feet of space below the rudder (probably closer to 4 feet) once your
Vega is in her cradle. Best to remove when she is being lifted. There is a
small tapered pin that holds the tiller end onto the rudder stock so make
sure you have removed this prior to rudder removal, it may need drilling
out! The brocnze shoe is held onto the hole with two or three long
bolts/nuts. There is a bearing inside this shoe which I expect has now worn
through, they are available from Vega Spares (spares@...) for
£12.50 Let meknow how you get on.

Has anyone, other than John Neal, removed the rudder with the boat in the water? How difficult a project was it?

Craig. It shouldn't be hard. I've done it in slings hanging from the travel lift. Take the tiller and head off. Remove the shoe from the keel and the rudder will slide down the tube. You could do it in the water. Just make sure you have enough room between the keel and the bottom. as I recall the bolts holding the keel on take a 14mm socket. I'll check later today. Lyric is sitting on her trailer and getting closer to finally getting back into the water. I'm diligently working towards that goal! Walt

Thats Gilles boat. V-137. I used to own it. I bought it from St. Vincent De Paul in Downtown LA for $500. I restored it and after 5 years of sailing it bought the Angelman Ketch you saw out at Catalina that same day. Gilles took Celerity(the Vega) off my hands for $1 on the condition I can buy it back for a buck plus any big investments. I really didn't want to lose her. He is a passionate boat owner keeping her in great shape and sailing her once or twice every week. You could buy that $600 one on Craigs list and we'll tow it up to my place where you can refit her.

Hi.
I'm planning to buy a wind instrument - prob *Nasa Clipper Wind*.
They are available at a reasonable price.

Two questions:

I already have a depth gauge (NASA Clipper again) installed in the
starboard companionway bulkhead - i.e. an opening cut in the bulkhead to
accommodate the depth gauge.

1. Would it excessively weaken the bulkhead if I installed the wind
instrument there also.
2. If I install it in the port bulkhead it would be just below the
compass - would the instrument (drawing very low current) be
likely to affect the compass?Thanks.

Hi John,I'm not sure if I can definitively answer your questions, but here are some observations..I think many people already have two guages together on one side (depth and speed).On the compass, I have the plastimo and it has a light bulb installed. Possibly as much current as your instrument draws. Also your instrument has some separation from the compass (r^2).
The bulb wires are twisted pair, which tends to cancel fields generated.roy

starboard side along with depth gauge.

My predecessor put a spherical compass on the port side and a depth sounder
and a speedo on the stbd side, and in doing so compromised both sides of the
aft end of cabin trunk as a nice out of the wind backrest, so keep that in
mind.

Also, if someone is leaning on the sounder of course I can't read it.

Why a wind gauge, why not just a nice masthead vane, cheap and simple and
