Rudder play

I have a 1977 Catalina 30 that I've been working on for a couple years. The rudder post seems to have excessive play underway. Has anyone else seen this situation and is there packing or a collar that can be used to fix the play in the rudder post? If I remove the tiller and the rudder post cap in the cockpit, will the rudder fall out through the bottom?
