I'm about to purchase a Hunter 23 that I intend to trailer sail. I will be removing the rudder because that where the mast crutch rides. The motor however is a 4 stroke. How can I transport this motor? I wouldn't think it would be good to lay it down.

Have you read the manual? On my Nissan ob, there's a small diagram telling you which side goes up when transporting.

Small outboards are designed to be laid down. However you do need to keep the oil in the motor, so as justsomeguy states, read the motor's owner's manual to learn which side to use.

My motor has labels on it to remind you as well.

We remove our rudder also, because the mast crutch is installed there when trailering. We don't remove the outboard when trailering. I pull it all the way up, and then secure it with a small ratchet-strap and pull it up tight. This way it doesn't bounce at all, and is no problem for trailering, even hundreds of miles.

I have a Briggs and Straton and it has to be laid down a specific way (face first not on its side). One of my kids knocked it over and I set it right after just a few moments.

It coughed blue smoke for about 3 minutes the next time I fired it up and I had to replace the spark plug to get it running smooth again.... so... I'm guessing it matters on your nissan. Try googling the owners manual (like justsomeguy implied).

I'll have to Google it bc the motor looks as old as me and I doubt the seller still has a manual.
