I have recently moved my Cat 30 to the end of a dock. I can only tie up on one side and us a lot of fenders! The side of my boat is being scratched and rubbed raw. I have new fenders (soft ones) and have tried to keep fresh wax on weekly. But some scratches are to deep to buff out. Help me save my boat! Does anyone have a fix for me. The slips in my area are to narrow for my beam. I am stuck on the end!!!

Mooring Whips

Have you considered a pair of mooring whips? They are flexible poles about 10-12 feet long, they attach to your dock at the bow and stern, then attach to the boat's bow and stern cleats with a length of line. Tensioning the lines causes the flexed poles to push your boat away from the dock. We see them used on small boats in NJ. I don't know if they make a set large enough for a C-30. Good luck. Randy

hull rubbing

Mooring whips may do the trick, however I would think three fenders with a spring line should absolutely nullify the problem. Attach your stern and bow cleats first then using a mid-boat anchor point (cleat, base of shroud, mast base etc)attach your boat at a third point pulling the boat directionally to stop or greatly reduce the motion that causes the rubbing...Don't forget the fenders!!!!!Good luck!!!!!!

Fender Covers

Have you tried terry cloth fender covers that West Marine sells? I hear these actually polish the hull rather than rub it raw. Kurt

another solution

A fellow in my yacht club loves tying up on the outside. His solution was to put an anchor about 50 ft. out and bring it back to the boat with a warning buoy about 8 ft. out from the boat. He just pulls enough tension on the line to hold his beautiful black painted topsides clear of the dock. When he leaves the dock, he ties the line to the dock. The channel is wide enough that the marina doesn't mind and in 15 years, I have never seen anyone snag the line.
