I have a '79 27 and have developed a brown stain running down from the rub rail. I am wondering if it is a rusty screw under the rail. Has anyone had experience removing and reinstalling the rubber to inspect this area.

Rusty srew

Hi Rob, I replaced the extrusion & the rub rail on a '72 27'. What a job! You are correct, the extrusion is held in place with screws. I'm not sure they would be the cause of the stain as they are not steel. However, if a previous owner replaced some of them and used a steel screw driver, then the heads of the screws could in fact be rusty. My guess is the only way to tell for sure is to remove some of the rubber insert near the stain and check there. The insert can be partially removed, although it is a tedious job. My suggestion is to cut the rubrail with a razor knife, inspect then re-install. The cut should be "thin" enough that the seam wouldn't be too noticable. I know this site isn't for offering things for sale, but given the circumstances... I do have about 20-25 feet of the insert. If you are interested just post here how I can contact you.
