Hunter 40 mears great oak
I Own a 1986 40 ledend which I bougth in 2000, it has the original engine 44 hp.I was told that this engine can run at 3200 RPM'? I can only run my boat at 2200 rpm's and get around 6 knots. If I go up to 2500 rpm's ,I get a small amount of vibrations in the boat. If I go to 3000 rpm's the boat shakes everything of the shelves. I had the trans rebuilt, new motor mounts, check shaft, it is straight, cutless bearing is good. Dose ay one have the specks on the propsize and pitch. Is this the top rpm's for this boat(2000). I would like to here from other owners that migh hve a answer to this problem.

Suspect the prop

If you are absolutely certain that there are no alignment issues, then it sounds to me that the prop is the gremlin and that it is over pitched. Is there a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust? Does your stuffing box drip at the prescribed 2 to 3 drops a minute when the motor is in gear? Also, is there no dripping when standing still? This would indicated that there might be misalignment. I would definitely put a call into Hunter Marine after January 3rd and find out how the boat was spec'd. You might also get this information from the owner's manual. Once you get the specs, then have the prop pulled and checked by a competent prop shop. A bottom cleaning diver should be able to pull it for you. There is a plate on top of your engine that has the max rpm for the particular model. You should definitely be able to run the motor to this figure. There is something wrong with only reaching 2200. Good luck, John Richard s/v Jack's Place
