"Pre-bend"

Sorry Peter but "Prebend" is exactly that. It is the bend in the mast when the mast is at rest. ie: not other shrouds tight. You then put more bend in by tightening the uppers and then reduce it by tightening the loweres.

Sorry mate but my mast is dead straight with no tension on the shrouds. I create pre-bend with the upper and lower shrouds. Any further bending that may be needed while under way is done using the (adjustable) backstay. According to Stuart Walker's "A Manual of Sail Trim": "Pre-bend" may be achieved by... modifying shroud/swept-back spreader relationships to attain mast bend independent of jibstay (or jib halyard) tension. Walker also goes on to add that the amount of mast prebend should at least match the luff curve of the sail, more but never less. I'd define pre-bend as the amount of bend in the mast with no sail loads on the rig, regardless of how it go there. Peter H23 "Raven"
