Probably cheaper to drive to Searsport and pick up the chain/rode and drive back. Sorry I wasn't sure how North you were.

Have you considered having a "local" make the splice? We had a local chandlery make the splice to previous purchased chain and line.

Properly done the rope does not move, so can't chafe.
I really doubt this. Are you saying that when loaded there is no stretch? It seems to me if there is any stretch, then there is abrasion. My crown splice survived the worst night I've had on anchor. One that bent the danforth shaft 40°. It held. I just think the strands are a weak point. I would rather have all chain. And that ends the concern about the anchor roller sides chafing through the line. Just my opinion.

Chain is a good thing. I carry 100 feet of 1/4 G4, with 200 feet of nylon and use the back splice to connect the two. But it really isn't in the water all that often. In 2008, 09, 10, 11, I traveled close to 10,000 miles, including Bahamas, and probably had the nylon out twice.

3 foot, 3 inch draft lets you do that-grin.

Oh, and if you make a tight splice, no, there's no movement.

You know, for all the complexity/simplicity of aforementioned splices, every few months or so, a man could lose a foot of rope for a new splice. These are not projects that require a rigger.

And I would have to concur. If the splice doesn't move, it shouldn't chafe. And if it should, the two distinct splices that have "risen to the top of the heap", try one for a while, then try the other. They're both ten minute splices..

Just to throw in the mix, I know Defender will custom make these, I saw one of their guys (believe he is their master rigger) making a rope to chain splice during the spring sale, he was no amateur, I would be inclined to trust any splice he made after watching him work for 10-15 minutes while they got my hoses....

you guys forget about rocks under the water doing chafe damage to the rope about 5 ft from the splice...happened 4 times in la cruz de huanacaxtle,, nayarit, mexico, when boats were anchored and then subsequently lost to the rocks due to chafe thru above the splice.....
i found those already made anchor with chain sets in west marine were waaay too light for practical use ..even for the boats they say they are spozedly made for--mebbe good for lunch bu ti would not ever trust my boat to those. nor would i trust my boat to rope rode spliced to chain. sorry, it just does not work for long term cruising.

Wait a minute here.

How does a rope rode fraying in two 4 or 5 feet ABOVE a splice become the fault of the splice??

Also- a "way to light" rode is also the fault of the splice?

Both sound like the fault of the skipper to me, not the splice.

And, yes, it does work for long term cruising- on my boat, from the Rio Grande River, around to Annapolis, via the Florida Keys and the Bahamas (Bimini, berry's, Nassau, Exumas, Eluethra) and back again. With no problems. And I rode out some pretty heavy winds using it.

BUT-as I said earlier- I use 100 feet of chain before the nylon, so the nylon is seldom overboard.

please assign blame on your own time--i do not nor did i do that. where did i WRITE that it was a fault of some ONE or some thing other than what i WROTE.

please re-read then comment. thankyou f or your objectivity....

also--you might just want to buy a lot more chain if you ever desire to cruise where there are rocks under the surface....just sayin, if you like your boat, anyway......

Sorry- when I read this-

"you guys forget about rocks under the water doing chafe damage to the rope about 5 ft from the SPLICE ..happened 4 times in la cruz de huanacaxtle,, nayarit, mexico, when boats were anchored and then subsequently lost to the rocks due to chafe thru above the SPLICE....."

I figured that implied the splice, since this thread was all ABOUT splices.

And yes- If I cruised in areas with lots of rocks underwater, I'd use more chain for sure. Of course, much of the Gulf Coast,East coast, and Bahamas have quite shallow anchorages so my 100 feet is plenty.

Sure wouldn't mind getting back down towards you. Cruised Progreso and Isla Mujeres, Yucatan, and Puerto Moreles, Quintana Roo several years ago on a yacht delivery. Beautiful spots.

OK- I re read it. It's titled "Rope to Chain Rode Packages"

I was gonna edit my last post to say-

I would love an all chain rode, but my boat is much smaller than your Formosa or your Erickson, and I simply can't afford the weight in the bow of more than 100 feet. Logistics rears it's ugly head.

Oh- and on a totally different subject- I have friends cruising Guatamala on an Erickson 37 named San San. Great folks should you bump into them, and the little girl is an absolute delight

Ralph, don't you love some of these replies? Drive down to Searsport, Maine. Google Map shows that to be only about five and thousand kilometers / 52 hours driving time each way.

Please add some description of your boat to your signature; this will help people respond to your situation.

tsbb--find a way to have chain go under main salon or somewhere midships so you can carry the lengths needed for security and good sleeping in rocks and coral...

Pvc pipe makes a good way to conduct chain to remote places in a bilge.
