Roller Furler quirky ?

I have a catalina 27 with roller furling jib. I think it's a Harken but not sure. When I pull the sail out it comes out really easy. But when I try to roll it back IN it goes for a spin or two then stops. If I let the sail back out a half spin then I can get another 2 spins to roll the sail IN. I basically have the sheet in one hand and the furling line in the other going back and forth with the two lines. Two spins in with the furling line, then a half spin out with the jib sheet, then 2 spins in with the furler line, etc. This works but obviously something is not right. Based on the internet this sounds like halyard wrap. If this is the case the first step would be to make sure there is proper tension on the halyard? The PO put the jib up for me so I have no experience how tight the jib halyard should be. Can I just kind of guess with the halyard tension?

I would add tension and try the furler. The description 2 warps in half wrap back, would suggest halyard tension might be a factor.

I would also make sure that the bearing drum is clean. If a Harken, the recommendation is to use a little liquid on the drum then spray with a water hose. Goal is to flush out any accumulated dirt from the bearings to let the drum roll smoothly.

Examine the drum for a name or other markings. You can then get a manual for the furler. Manuals are a helpful tool. Less guessing.

The issue was halyard wrap. Eventually the halyard snapped and needed to be replaced. Planning to install a guide to change the halyard angle to prevent wrap. If you have the issue I posted initially you can visibly see the halyard wrap if that’s the issue. The key thing to know is that it’s intermittent, it wraps then unwraps so in a static position it may not be wrapped. Also it only happened when I was following up the jib. Never happens when unrolling.
