The mast on my Hunter 31 is not that substantial, nor that wide. I worry about threaded pointy objects inside the mast to catch unwary wiring or rigging. The rivnut has a pretty short smooth profile inside the mast.
What did the factory use? The mast section of a Stiletto catamaran is similar to the H31 (lower boat weight but comparable snatch loads and mast height) and all fittings are riveted. Mine was 30 years when I sold it. Rivet failure was unheard of in the brand. That said, boom bales were through bolted.

What's your feeling about aluminum vs. stainless?

I had a Grumman canoe that was put together entirely with rivets and the last time I looked airplanes are still flying with the skins riveted to the frames.

when i lived in Augusta and was running my welding shop and hitch service i used to get a Grumman canoe about every three months or so with loose rivits..... they belonged to the local Boy Scouts unit and i would have to weld them back up where they had gotten loose and leaked ......it wasnt easy to do as the joint had a rubber gasket between the layers of metal and would make it very diffacult to weld......

Did you just consider taking up on the rivets with a hammer and a bucking block?

yes but the gasket was in bad shape and there was no budget to replace it ....being a freebe the best way to go was to just tig it and be done with it never got any welds back to be repaired thank goodness it was always in the keel seam that needed repair.......
