Now that the wind is picking up with the advent of fall on the LI sound again, I need to find a quicker way to drop the traveler or ease the mainsheet from behind the wheel when a big gust comes along.

Funny you post that. Just this morning I was out with winds 10-30mph and wishing the same thing. Luckily there is no reason you can't position yourself in front of the wheel to ease the main, the boat doesn't care where you sit as long as you can adjust the wheel. I also notice when I am more amidship I can trim the sails easier and let the boat steer itself while I step below for something (head). Seems like when I trim it out while aft, then move forward, my course deviates quite a bit.

I've never been able to lock down the wheel & go below for maybe even 30 seconds without going off course by at least 30 degrees. Catalinas love to wander off course.
But this was also true of my S 2, O day, & many other boats I've sailed in the past 30 years. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford a working auto pilot!

Have you tried it from in front of the wheel? I found the weight difference important. When I'm seated in back and get everything running smooth, the minute I step forward I am shifting ballast and throw everything off. Used to drive my wife bonkers when she's below on the sofa reading and I walk past to the head, now she rarely even comments.
