I have seen in the archives rig tension #'s of "cap/uppers@315 lbs. and lowers@252 lbs."Is this for the stays as well as the shrouds? Any help would be appreciated. LLOYD

Standing rigging tension

I set my upper and lower tensions at just beyond snug; enough so that they are not loose when the boat is at rest. The backstay is set up quite tight, so as to minimize headstay sag. I have no quantitative values, but consider that any initial tension is increased as the rig is loaded. In the extreme, a very high initial number could cause higher than design intent loading in the rig and at the chainplates as the boat is sailed hard.

Rigging tension

I don't tune my boat to any presupposed numbers. Instead, I set it up so that each shroud or stay is hand-tight (as far as I can do my well lubricated turnbuckles by hand). Then I set mast rake. Next I go back and forth tightening the head and backstays. I have roller furling so its hard to judge tension. Instead I gauge it using the backstay. The slightly different lenghts works out through quirks in geometry to slightly different tensions but its close enough to use. On my 25 I'm looking for about an inch of deflection in the stay with a 20 pound push at shoulder level. Then I do the upper shrouds. Again, I'm looking for that inch of deflection with a 20 pound push. Next the lowers, not quite as tight as the uppers. Then I sail the boat. Things are tight enough if nothing goes slack enough to risk jumping from the spreaders (which are wired anyway, naturally.) After that its a question of tuning for performance. what kind of lbs?

you must be talking about lbs under load tension -- with no wind just hand tight --- and then be careful! no tools for leverage! 22 will flap a little under power on the leeward side- it is tempting to tighten to get rid of this, but a big mistake! read the book that came with the boat --there is a discription ot the procedure. (there is oday 22 info on line if you don't have the paper) Algae
