Rewiring Paddle Wheel Speed Transducer

I frequently have to remove my paddle wheel speed transducer and clean it out so that it will spin freely. It gets some barnacles and slime if the boat sits for very long and won't spin.

This task would be much simpler if it could be "unplugged" so that this job could be done while standing at the sink or on the dock rather than laying down on the cabin sole.

Has anyone cut the wire to the transducer and installed some sort of plug/receptacle so that this could be done? Is this even feasible?

Appreciate any thoughts on this.

Cheers,
Jim

I believe that the wiring to the transducer is a pre-determined length and is hard-wired. Any disruption of the connection could alter the calibration of the unit. To tell you the truth, I just leave mine out. It never seemed to give me a good indication of boat speed, so I use the GPS instead. I suppose, though, if you want to make good use of your wind instruments, indicating apparent wind, etc., you should leave it in.

I use GPS for checking on my speed over ground and computing my ETA

....I have to deal with ever changing currents in the area where I sail.

I have cut and spliced my speed and depth cables with success.

Placed ends in a tube and closed with silicone seal for water tightness.

Paul,

Thanks for that info. I think I will try to add some sort of plug/receptacle to the wire so I can unplug and remove it for cleaning.

If it ends up as a big failure then I can live without it.

Paul,

Report back how it works out. I have one that has gotten stupid and really don't want to have to pull a new cable it when I replace it.

I replaced my speed / temp transducer and used the Raymarine Junction Box as shown in the attached PDF.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Good Luck
