Movin' on up

In the space of fifteen years I went from a 25' to a 30' to a 38'. Each move was for more creature comforts to keep the "Admiral" interested in sailing. If you are handy enough to do the maintenance and chores, then my recommendation is to go as large as you can afford. You'll still get "three foot-itis" after a couple of years. Of course, a "hard" survey is mandatory for two reasons. First, to warn you away from something that might be "too good to be true". Second, so that you can negotiate the price to include repairs, etc. at the expense of the owner, or a reduction if you have to have them done yourself. For safety, comfort, value, and parts availability it's hard to beat a vintage Catalina 30.

Catalina 30 with Wing keel

I went from a 2 1/2 years on a 84 Catalina 22 with swing-keel and pop-top, hank-on Genoa and 8 hp honda outboard, Passed-up looking at 27's, thanks to great advice from sailors like those here who said the narrow beam and small cabin area would become a reason to move up again, To an 88 Catalina 30 Tall Rig with wing-keel (3' 10" draft) 13 years ago. It was the best decision I could have ever made. The cabin space on 30 foot boats is amazingly different than on 27 footers. Having a Universal M25XP 23 hp inboard diesel with wheel and roller-furler foresail and Dutchmann flaking system on mainsail makes the boat able to be single-handed easily. I spend all weekend on the boat, and 1-2 week long cruises each year, and she is very comfortable. Hope this helps...

tanzer 28

I sailed on a tanzer 28, nice boat for the size. in your price range, and has big boat features. the rudder needs to be redesigned for weather helm, though... I echo the catalina 30 advise. great boat for the size, always in demand, huge owners group for advise. only problem is cat 30's in your price range (>15K) will be the old ones and will probably need deck or bulkhead repairs.

Catalina 30

I'm from Ohio and didn't know beans about boats when I bought a catalina 30. Roomy, stiff, has every sail adjustment known to man, and cheap. Bill
