Has anyone repowered using a Yanmar 2gm20f, if so are there any tips on what not to do. Currently have a dead atomic 4 and would prefer to install a diesel rather than repair it.

More info please

What boat are you speaking of? I assume it's a C30. If so I don't beileve you'll get a Yanmar to fit under the sette. Look at the Universal M3-20 Pat

Boat is a Cat 30

Forgot to identify the boat model, its a Cat 30. From initial calc's the engine will project up an extra 4.38" and think this is a bit too much. I have heard of engines being installed with a "Hat Box" over the top and the cushion being modified with a cut out in the underside.

Yanmar

Rob can you share a few pics. of your Yanmar instal. That's the first on I've heard of. I'm thinking they had mounts made to lower the engine into the stringer more. A 4" increase in height would be about the top of you cushion or slightly higher. I'd consider that intrusive, and fid something else, just an oppinion. Pat

Yanmar Repower

Bill, We have a "77 Cat 30 which had a single cylinder YSE-12 Yanmar diesel in it when we got it. The engine died so decided to upgrade a bit. I located a freshly rebuilt Yanmar 2GM (13 HP)at Gartside Marine here in Victoria for $4,500. and made the transplant myself last July while still in the water. First thing I discovered is that the stringers (4x4's)that are glassed in to the hull did not line up with the new engine motor mounts, so had to grind them out and glass in new ones. Set the new engine in lined it up as best I could. Then had my next door neighbour who is a shipwright come down and get it straight and at the proper angle. The engine head and top of the exhaust elbow do protrude above the seat and I had to cut out a portion of the plywood seat in two places. I used some 3/4 plywood to raise the height with a 1/2 plywood top. I only needed near an inch extra clearance with my new engine. I have not yet had the cushions cut (hollowed out) to fit nicely over the new sections. I also found that the 12X12 two blade prop was really not compatable with the new engine. Less speed and power for some reason. Actually just put a new 3 blade Campbell Sailor prop on two days ago and hope to try it out this afternoon or Sunday to ascertain if there is any (hopefully) difference. If you are in Victoria and would like to take a look at the conversion you are welcome. You can contact me at work 250-361-0323, or cell at 250-883-4957. My e-mail at work is cliffc@city.victoria.bc.ca

try this

Before you do anything check out the Beta engine it has a lot to offer at a good price. I have a friend that is repowering a Catalina 30 and used the Beta (18hp I think). It is a marinized Kabota with some things that Universal did not do. Any you need to check it out my friend also had stringer problems and Beta made the mounts for the boat stringers! If you are mechanical there are some shops that will let you do as much as your comfertable with Good Luck Jim
