I'm wondering what people are repowering the Hunter 27 that came with the Renault RC-8D engines with?

Due to the age/value of the Cherubini 27's

most repowers are being done with transom mounted gas powered outboards. Later model 27's were powered by a Yanmar 1GM engine which was the precursor of the 1GM-10 being produced today. I have not priced them recently but you are looking at around $2,800 plus installation costs. A Beta 10 from Beta marine is another alternative.

repower?

I looked at a 197x Hunter 27 with a Renault RC-8 before I bought my 1978 Hunter 27. It came with a Yanmar SB8 which is dependable and easy to start but not much power. The Renault seemed to be a stronger engine but I was concerned about parts availablity. What really helped me make that decision was being told an impeller would have to be ordered from England. I was told that the Renault was only used by Hunter for a year or two before it went out of production. I asked the local Yanmar guy about a replacement for my SB8 and he said a 2Gm would run about $8000 installed (Yeow!!!)

Beta/Nanni

Before I owned it, the Renault was replaced by a 10hp Nanni (Kubota based) diesel. Nanni has been good but parts pricey. Beta is a good choice. If you do it, go for more horsepower so you can motor into the wind and get someplace.

ReRepowered

I as of 2 months ago I have switch back to an inboard (Yanmar SVE-8) from a outboard saildrive 9.9, that had replaced a renault. I have ran the outboard on the boat (1980 Hunter 27)for about a year and I feel for my area the inboard is a better choice, in addition it gets far better fuel economy than the four stroke outboard. both have no problem pushing the boat to hull speed and I have been out in 25-30 knot and been able to make forward headway but with the outboard catching air was a problem. I suppose if my cruising area had greater tide swings and more current it might be a different situation in terms of horse power. Also the outboard just looked ugly on that nice stern :)

Yanmar

I went the Yanmar route. The new 2YM15 fits in the same space and gives you 14 HP. Its pricy, but if your handy you can do it yourself. The problem with an outboard is rough weather and having the prop out of the water.

Check out the Bukh engine too.

Chad: Check out a Bukh engine too. Very reliable and less expensive than the Yanmars. You may also want to look for a used Yanmar 2GM Installation can cost as much or more than the engine so shop around for someone that knows what they are doing and get a firm quote. There are lots of parts that are needed when you do a repower.

Hunter 27 repowers

When Hunter started the H-27 (1974), Yanmar wasn't making anything smaller than maybe the 12-HP marine diesel. It is entirely probable that Yanmar America instigated the 8-HP diesel because of the H-27 demand. That was probably about 1978. When I was with a Hunter dealer in 1982 I was ordering impellers and other parts for the Renault owners from Guy Couache in Ft Lauderdale. These parts are still available by whoever took that over. MOST H-27 Mk 1 repowers have been with Yanmar, since the installation of the 8-HP engine into the existing H-27 was a known entity-- the boats essentially were brought up to later spec. I think the engine logs are the sane width for both motors (again that would be a Yanmar specification). I would not go for an outboard on the heavy and rolly H-27. The boat's whole value is that it was one of the cheapest DIESEL-powered cruising boats in the market.. and that's still a selling feature today. Ten or twelve grand gets you a very decent wheel-steering H-27. That's WITH a newer Yanmar.
