Felow Cat30 owners, I'm looking to replace my original wooden spreaders with the retro-fit aluminum equivalent. I was hoping I would not have to de-step the mast to accomplish this project -- simply by placing temporary wooden spreaders in order to retain the presure while replacing it with the new stuff. However, I just realized that I'm not sure how the spreaders fasten to the shroud. Does it slip on through the bottom fitting (turn-buckle), or does it simply detach and reattach from the shroud without disassembly from the turn-buckle? Thx so much for your anticipated feedback... Rgds, -Chuck

Ya Gotta Step the Mast

Ron, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't see a way for you to replace the spreaders without taking down the mast. The bolts that hold the spreaders to the mast are also the bolts that hold the shroud tangs. On a positive note, my spreader upgrade is fantastic. Very sturdy, light & they really seem like they're built to last. Good luck, Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie C-30 Hull# 632

Step the mast

Had the same problem. Only one easy solution. I pulled the mast and replaced the spreaders, replaced the deck light, cleaned the radar, cleaned the mast. And don't wait. The wooden spreaders lose strength.

SailNet

Check out Sailnet.com. It's my understanding that they will fabricate aluminum replacement spreaders that will fit exactly into the existing brackets that your wooden ones use. This eliminates the need to unstep the mast and remove and replace all of the existing hardware. You send your old wooden ones to them and they make the new ones to fit. Replacing your wooden ones with temporary replacements made out of a 2x4 isn't difficult and doesn't require unstepping the mast. As long as you're not going to sail with them it's not a critical job.

Check Mainsheet

There was an article in Mainsheet with a photo or two, as I recall, on replacing the wood spreaders with Alum., with the mast up sometime in the last couple of years. If I weren't so lazy, I'd go back to my archives and look up a citation for you. But I am, so you'll just have to look, unless maybe someone else can remember...
