I need to replace the topping lift on '85 28.5. Any suggestions on length of cordage, and size. Also, steaming and masthead lite maintenance and/or replacement?

"General Interest" or "Hunter 28.5"?

Cappy - "General Interest" means the post is relevant to ALL boats but it appears it is applicable to just 28.5s??? If General Interest is selected then that puts the post in with the O'Day, Beneteau, Catalina, etc. forums. To answer your question, though, suggest attaching a line to the main halyard and hoist it to the masthead then stretch it tight to the end of the boom. Note the point where it meets the end of boom. Also stretch it tight from the masthead to the point on the mast where it makes an exit and note that point. Pull the halyard back down and measure these lengths. Add any other lengths (for knots, distance to bitter end, length from the halyard shackle to the sheave when it was hoisted x 2, etc.) and take the sum total of everything. This should be really close to what you need to buy. Size: no comment - if the existing works replace in kind? Steaming Light: Use Lanocote on stainless screws when replacing, both in-mast screws and the long screws that hold the lens cover on. Use dielectric compound on all wire/brass connections to prevent corrosion, ditto on the festoon bulb contacts.

use simple math

Use the dimensions from the specs page to figure out the length needed. In this case, "P" squared plus "E" squared equals the hypotenuse, add the mast height "P" and add some for tailing to the cockpit.

General interest?

Gee John, lighten up. What do you sail? Seems like you were able to give a good response to the question at hand and if I'm not mistaking, you don't have a 28.5. Seems to me these forums work better than anything else on the web. Maybe someone on the "General Interest" forum used to own a 28.5 and has some good advice to offer.

"General Interest" Spams other forums

Whenever "General Interest" is selected the post is broadcasted to the entire population of boat owners. If everybody selected general interest then the individual forums would be useless. Readers then have to wade through lots of supurfulous posts to find the ones they want. Additionally, if someone wants to read archived posts with regard to a paticular boat, in this case a Hunter 28.5, the post would appear. In this situation the post will not appear because the boat make and model wasn't identified. One of the benefits of a data base is being able to retrieve information easily. With regard to the topping lift answer, I answered it because there were probably a hundered people who read the post but left no answer and I just took a stab at it to try and help someone before it disappeared and got archived. I don't know anything about the 28.5 topping lift and just winged-it. Ran out of steam when I got the line to near the base of the mast because I didn't know what happens then hence "measure the rest". Who knows, with the proper "relevant" link maybe an answer would have showed up from someone with that model.

Clarification

The model designation, which includes the General interest selection, effects how the post might be found through a site search, and who views it through a custom (My HOW) forum, which may only be set up to read posts about certain models. General interest posts are not seen by users of our other web sites. That's what the Shared Forums do. Shared forums include Ask All Sailors, The Head Mistress, Props and Drive Trains, etc. So, this thread is only viewed on HOW but because of the General interest label could be missed by some folks using My HOW Forum to filter out General interest posts. ph.
