I have a '76 Oday 25 that recently blew out the mainsail in heavy gust on a Southern lake. The main was original equipment and is over due for replacement. Any recommendations for sail suppliers/lofts that carry a good selection of used as well as new sails? vp

Now is a good time to learn about Main sails
Vin, now that you are in this position, it is a good time to learn about main sail. I would do a compare all the sails I inquire about. 1. Material weight. 2. Type of material and it's specific qualities. The cloth is made in so many ways, find out what you are buying. Some are designed to be stabile in both directions and some have flex in one direction. Some are a tight weave and some are actually loose weaved and filled with rosin. The cloth is often weaved by one manufacture for many end product finishers. I am saying that different companies finish the cloth in their own way, combo of rosin, heat, etc. 3. Reef points. 4. Adjustability for flattening or max shaping. Ability to move the center of effort forward or back. Vin, know this, with the high aspect main on the 25, I sail almost as fast without the main as I sail with it. The 25 main sail needs to be adjustable if it is going to make a difference in how the boat performs. If you are up grading, ,ake sure you are upgrading. r.w.landau

Vin, my advice is from my own mistake
Vin, About 3 years ago I bought a furling genoa from someone here on the forum. I was excited!The sail was less than 2 years old and I got it for a great price. Problem, The sail didn't fit the 25 O'Day well. It turns out that i making the sail, the sail maker let the clew drop in height and so I do not have enough genoa block travel to tension the leech properly in certian wind conditions. Though the sail was a bargin, it has also been a head ach to the point that I have just finished modifying an original hank on sail to furling. I intend to recut the bargin sail so that it performs better. However, this has taken allot of my time learning about sail design and getting much practice sewing zig-zag sail stiches.
