Replacing mainsail halyard

I need to replace the rope/wire mainsail halyard on my 1987 31-2 & I want to replace it with an all-rope halyard (probably the headsail halyard replaced as well). Does anyone know if I will have any problems with chaffing, etc. (assuming the original design was for rope/wire halyards) with an all-rope halyard - is the masthead designed for a wire halyard?

I can't speak for a Pearson, but I did this to my Hinterhoeller This spring with no issues.

The sheaves on my hast had the smaller inside groove for the wire, and the wider outside for the rope so it was no problem.

Hopefully a Pearson owner can give you more info, but it's a nice upgrade to do!

I just replaced mine on our Hunter 23.5 main sail and Jib halyards it was pretty easy to do and got all rope, no wire, the original ropes were the original ('93) and they were all rope.

I had all rope on my San Juan 26 and no problems.

I just bought my ropes from Cajun Ropes and they did a nice job splicing and they can customize what ever you need.

Hi there. I've got a P32 (circa 1980, with a Hall spar) and I did the jib halyard when we first got her. As in one of the earlier posts, the sheaves up top had a groove for the wire, as well as a channel for rope. Three years on and halyard is still perfect. Hope this helps

I replaced my old wire to rope halyards with stayset x a couple of years ago It was easy enough
all I did was tape the new halyards to the bottom of the old and hoisted them up thru the sheave. just make sure you use the same size line

Mike,

Back to your original question, your boat has an Isomat spar and the sheaves will take wire or rope halyards. I would not go any larger than what is on the tail of your halyard now so that there is no chafe.

With mast down or a trip to the Mast head, you can check the sheaves. If designed for rope/wire halyard they are likely to have a U groove (for the rope) changing deeper in the sheave to a smaller grove (for the wire). Need to have a line size that matches the larger of the two grooves. Or if permanent change over to line not wire you can modify the sheave by sanding the groove down to a smooth line only size. Alternately you can buy a replacement sheave and install. I had to add a sheave and had one made to match the others in my mast head.
