Replacing an aluminium water tank

I'm giving strong consideration to replacing the original alum. water tank (124gal) on my H-45. I'd appreciate any input especially from someone who has done this project on an H-45. The alum. tank does not leak but it is covered with some type of growth (calcium ?) The growth surrounds the outlet nipple and from time to time chunks of this stuff breakoff and clog the water line. I recently cut an 8" inspection plate (now I wish I hadn't)and discovered this growth. I've treated it with white vinegar but after leaving a 50% solution in the tank for a week it hasn't made a difference. My wife can't believe we've used this tank for drinking water for the last 10 yrs. From what I can understand the best replacement would be a polyprop tank. Anyway, any intelligent suggestions would be appreciated.

Has it affected the taste/smell of your water?

What you obviously have are hard water mineral deposits, which are non harmful...the tank isn't leaking...WHY are you becoming obsessed with it? If the lumps were soft and dissolved in a cup a water, it would be one thing...but these are hard rocks--minerals. If a few mineral deposits are bothering you, don't EVER take a look at the inside of the water main to your house! If that's not enough, the inside of the dock supply line, to which your hose that you use to fill the tank is attached, will send you screaming into the night--and so will the inside of your hose. ALL you're seeing is hard water minerals. Scrape off the ones around that tank discharge that can break off and clog your pump...then relax and leave well enough alone till the tank starts leaking...which will prob'ly be another 10 years or more. And stop using anti-bacterial soaps, too...they pollute.

What type of plate

What type of plate did you install? If it's one of those plastic ones they sell at WM they will leak. I am making some 6" plates out of aluminium plate. It will have a blacking plate on the inside of the tank which I will then bolt the top to.

Plastic won't leak if...

you seal it under the flange with a rubber gasket or the proper caulk to mount plastic on metal.

Ask about wall thickness

The tank has to be strong enough to support the weight of the water (8.33 lbs/gal). If you can specify it, spec 3/8" minimum. If they claim that anything less than 1/4" is ok, I suggest you keep looking for a tank source.

Tank thickness

Peggy etal Thanks for your input. The bid from Dura Weld (polyprop tank) called for 3/8" thickness so I maybe covered there. As far as the 8" inspection plate I initially had trouble bedding it. The alum tank had bowed hence the lid would not seat properly if the flanged were torqued down. I have about 1/4" of 4200 with only two bolts holding it in place. I tried filling the tank to overflowing just to see if it would leak. It didn't. Since this is probably just temporary I'm not too worried. Thanks again everyone for your input.
