Hi Folks: My ammeter no longer works and I want to know how to install a voltmeter. Does anyone out there have any tips? Thanks. MJ

voltmeter

1. If you pull out the ammeter, you'll need to tie the two electrical leads together, as it is a series device. Make sure these leads are well secured & insulated to keep the connection from shorting to ground. The ammeter might have an external shunt resistor (very low resistance -- almost a dead short) wired in parallel with it. If the meter leads were tied together, you can just leave the shunt in place. A voltmeter is wired in parallel to the main battery circuit, and is generally a high resistance device that draws little current. However, it does draw current when it's showing a voltage, so wire it after the main switch. 3. I'd suggest reading through one of the good boat electrical books on the market for specifics. N.Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual", McGraw-Hill, is a good reference.

Harness Upgrade

You didn't say what boat you have, but if it's a C-30, there's a wiring harness upgrade kit available that includes voltmeter conversion to a voltmeter. If I recall it's available from Seaward.

Seaward Haness Upgrade

The harness upgrade is available from Seaward Products (310) 699-7997, and is absolutely worth the time, effort, and minimal cost. The upgrade does away with the ammeter, the long wiring run from the alternator, back to the panel, then back again to the batteries. After the upgrade you will have more charging capacity, better charged batteries, and the elimination of one of the major causes of problems in the whole circuit. Call now and do it!! Tom Soko.
