Looking at replacing our FP 10.5kW 12 mini with an alternative model. Basic assessment of our power needs indicates a 9kW would suffice, but nothing else seems to fit without a lot of adjustment to exhausts etc. Even then, only with no sound shield. Looked at kohler, northern lights and cummins onan to date. Anyone else been through this process that can shed some light on options? Thanks

I installed a nextgen 5.5 in my 49. It has met all our power demands so far. My main reason to choose this model was it fit in the space.

If only it were that easy....

We've had four companies look at it, unable to locate the problem. Sending electronics to FP USA for diagnostics.

What is it exactly that your panda is doing? I have a 20 minute panda myself sometimes 10 it's been like this for several years now. Have not been able figure out why. Kabuda engine I believe is not the problem it's all the crap that panda did to it.

It overheats, it does not charge, it shuts down, won't start, will start but work for long 10-20 minutes, or any of the above. The FP dealers themselves on two islands have suggested going with another brand. They are not a good machine.

My 4200

My FP was running great for a few years but than hit and miss would not start and called FP servce in Fl and they said one of 2 relays is the starting circuit and other relay for electric fuel pump and internal water cooling pump.
I replaced the start relay either 3K or 2K not sure of the # and things worked great but i did not put plastic cap back on due to misplaced and than hit and miss not starting and also shuttting down.
The 2 relays from vibration became loose and than where the relays plug into those spade connections were loose and so I needed to squeez them so they make a very tight fit and than put relays in and return the plastic cap and screw to hold down so they don't get loose, the vibration causes them to loosen and not make good cconnections.
I don't have my manual handy but one relay for starter and # 2 relay works the relay for the eelectric fuel pump and the internal cooling pump.
Your FP may be differently wired but your manual should help.
Been running great.

Come on guys, lets face facts, the F/P genset is a disposable piece of equipment. It's far more economical in the long run to replace the thing with something more reliable thanthrowing good money after bad for F/P technicians to spend days trying to repair something they have no clue how to.
I believe that the inherent problem with the F/P is twofold. First it runs at such a high rpm that it wears out prematurely. Second, the thing is packed so tightly into such a small enclosure and then buried deep inside a locker somewhere that it can't be sufficiently cooled.

Don't totally agree

I have a 12 kw on my 49. For the most part, it has run well, but the hours are low, and I'm in fresh water.
I did have some relay problems, and FP replaced them. It was an initial design problem, and they ended up modifying the relays.

Just did a charter on a boat with a FP 12, and they've had a lot of problems I've been a strong supporter of FP in the past, but I must say that their service response is not great currently. They need to fix this, because people are getting really upset with their brand.
As far as cooling, the unit doesn't have any cooling problems.
With the water / gas separator, it runs very quietly.

I have dealt with Mastervolt and found that it depends on the environment you're operating in. It seems Mastervolt doesn't like a high ambient temp with high humidity. I have also experienced many problems with service.
