Don't totally agree
Come on guys, lets face facts, the F/P genset is a disposable piece of equipment. It's far more economical in the long run to replace the thing with something more reliable thanthrowing good money after bad for F/P technicians to spend days trying to repair something they have no clue how to.
I believe that the inherent problem with the F/P is twofold. First it runs at such a high rpm that it wears out prematurely. Second, the thing is packed so tightly into such a small enclosure and then buried deep inside a locker somewhere that it can't be sufficiently cooled.
I have a 12 kw on my 49. For the most part, it has run well, but the hours are low, and I'm in fresh water.
I did have some relay problems, and FP replaced them. It was an initial design problem, and they ended up modifying the relays.
Just did a charter on a boat with a FP 12, and they've had a lot of problems I've been a strong supporter of FP in the past, but I must say that their service response is not great currently. They need to fix this, because people are getting really upset with their brand.
As far as cooling, the unit doesn't have any cooling problems.
With the water / gas separator, it runs very quietly.
