Replacement Hatch Seals

Hi All,

I'm looking to replace my hatch seals which are very worn out and am looking for some advice about what to get. There is a huge selection of different rubber available and I've no idea which is best. I'd like to have whatever offers the best seal (I'm on a mud berth right now and water will pool in the cockpit when on the mud). Also it probably needs to be quite thick and a bit compressible as currently with the perished seals there is no pressure at all when closing the latchs which are in fact quite loose.

The two places I've found over the internet which sell hatch rubber are Portmere rubber (Home) and Bridge rubber and plastics (http://www.bridgerubber.co.uk). Has anyone here used them and have any thoughts or know of any other places?

Thanks,
Jan

I found high quality neoprene with adhesive backing, one inch roll, easily cut. Works great for that application and other similar applications.Nicholas H. Walsh P.A.

How's that for a coincidence, I've just finished replacing a cockpit locker lid and used adhesive backed neoprene foam tape, 5mm thick x 20mm wide stuck to the wood lid, as Nico suggested and as I have used successfully too. Once you've stuck it on the lids will be very hard to latch closed, but it soon compresses to fill the gap and then you have a nice seal. E.g. EBAY Item number: 180620870023.

It is solid neoprene but pretty low density - spongy/squishy, you might say. Around 3/16 inch thick (5mm?) I found mine at a big hardware store (Maine Hardware, Portland), bet you could too. Didn't cost much, maybe $10.00 for 8 feet, something like that.Nicholas H. Walsh P.A.

PS - the same stuff in 10mm or so thickness is great for the forward hatch.

When I needed some seals I found a shop that caters to hot rodders. They
have some great sealing material -- the molded neoprene as used in cars.
These also have sticky backs. Not as cheap as the stuff found at Home Depot
though. But I think worth the extra cost as it doesn't take all that much.
