The furling line to the Hood 705 LD roller furling is seperating at the splice and requires replacing. Upon receiving a new spliced furling line from Hood I discovered I would have to disassemble the roller furling unit. In addition all of the double blocks leading to the aft cabin are riveted and will need to be replaced. Does anyone have any advice on changing the furling line? Would it be easier to splice a 53' 3/8" line on the boat after feeding it through the blocks and the roller furling?

End to end splice

If the original line is in good shape you should have it spliced at the boat. I had a guy do this for $20. Return the new one for credit. Otherwise have the new one spliced at the boat.

Furling line

Hi Morse: I had the same unit on my Capri26 and replacing it was not a problem. Take your second headsail halyard and attach it to the stemfitting and snug it up. this will keep the mast upright when you release the turnbuckle on the forestay to lay the prespliced line around the furling unit. When the forestay is back in place, loosen the allen screw on the drum of the furling unit and the drum will seperate slightly. Make sure you don't loose the rope stopper. Place the line in the furling unit drum and slide drum back togather and tighten the allen screw. You should be able to remove the sheves from the line guides on the stantions and place the furling line behind them and replace the sheves. I know it sounds complicated, but it can be accomplished in about 1/2 hour. (maybe a little more time the first time!) The Hood 705 is a popular unit and there should be someone in your area who has done this before that may be willing to help show you how its done. Good luck Dave
