Sorry to jump ahead but I can't help myself. Once I get the boat ready and more importantly myself prepared. Is there any reason why the boat can't go in the gulf on a good day?

The big difference in coastal cruising and lake sailing is the fact that you can't swim to shore if you fall out... and the boat can sail off without you if you do. Yikes!
So get a harness and set up a jack line, learn how to hove to, and how to reef your sails fast in case something comes up quick... and have fun!!!!! Push your comfort zone a little at a time, and/or sail with someone who has done it before.
There is nothing better than going to new places in a sailboat.

I don't know why but I can't wait to get this thing out in open water. I've never sailed but I think it's gonna be blast in the Gulf. So get the boat fixed, make a few laps around the lake, and off I go into the wild blue. Lol. Just kidding. Many years ago I worked in the Gulf. I know how dangerous it can be. But I'm still very excited about the possibility of going.

I had a mast step made at D&R. Great job, looks better than original. Thanks everyone for your opinions. I will be home at the end of the week. Planning on building a lift on Monday. I have some 2 3/8 in. pipe. My plan is 2 A frames and some straps. Does that sound like it will work to y'all ? I've never lifted a boat.
