Very close to the recent pedestal painting discussion, but this is about repainting my wheel. The original paint was peeling badly on the spokes, I was doing a project at work where I had a sandblaster going, so I blasted the whole wheel down to bare metal. The wheel is cast steel and as you can see by the photos it has some pretty significant pitting from the sandblasting.

I'm kind of figuring using some kind of auto body filler primer and then alot of hand sanding to get it smooth, and then maybe some of the epoxy appliance paint talked about in the pedestal painting post. Any thoughts on my plan or specific products to use?

New stainless wheel is $191 from a discount online boat store, but I want to avoid that if I can get it looking nice for short money.

I would prime it as is ( with Zinc Chromate ) and paint with epoxy. The rough texture would give a non-skid effect, then do a leather wrap on the rim if desired.

A lot less work and should look good!

I had good luck powder coating small pitted item on several projects. I kept an old stove in the garage that I used for baking those items. However the wheel is larger and a pro would charge at least 1/3 of a new wheel, plus your traveling costs, your time, etc, etc. I have seen stainless units go for cheap on Ebay. Just keep an eye on it.

Contact one of the salvage/used companies like Minnie's Yacht Surplus in Costa Mesa, Ca. They may have a SS one that will fit.

There is also a company that will vinyl coat your existing wheel. It is soft and easy to grip too.

Went with the $5 rustoleum white appliance epoxy, no primer (can said put it straight on clean bare/dry steel, which I certainly had) 3 coats, an hour apart waited overnight and baked at 175 for an hour. Only the biggest divots down near the hub didn't get smoothed right out with a short 320 grit wet sanding. Washed & baked it dry again and put on three more light coats. After it air dries overnight I'll give it one final baking in the oven.

The Fleet Admiral of Combat Operations is off in Paris for the week. The garage as paint booth, and kitchen oven with tin foil open door containment as paint bake furnace were pressed into service only as a result of her position at the very edge of the hemisphere relative to the theater of operations. Oh, and the camera's in France.
