My cabin pinstripes are in very bad shape. they make the whole boat look bad. even though i need a detail, it would look a lot better without those crazed pinstripes. should i remove them all together, I dont think it would look bad w/o them. But, what will that look like since the gelcoat underneath will probably be shinier? should i just replace them?
Im considering a professional wet sand, compound, & wax. I bought the stuff to do it myself, but i just dont think i have it in me. I tested a 3 x 3 area, and it definately looks better with just a compound. I didnt buy finesse it II or wax yet. it seemed pretty quick & easy. I could see my docklines in the reflection, but its too sunny right now to really get a good look at it. The pro's say it definately needs a wet sand. thats funny, my survey reported no oxidation on the hull. I just pressured washed the whole boat right before he got there. now a few weeks later, you run your fingers over it and its all chalky. But, im just getting fat and lazy. and beer doesnt help. the boat is in the water too. it will be a pain in the butt.
I have had 5 detailers give quotes. most did not seem professional. one guy told me $16/ft, then proceeded to drink all my beer and by the time he left, he said $12/ft. he never called back.
The guys i trust have done several boats on my dock. they all look fabulous. but they are $33-$37/foot for a stem to stern, full detail. lockers, stainless, aluminum, buff out the hatches, power cords, canvas, wet sand, compound, wax, multiple washes during the job, etc. They say they mix there own compound for boats in my condition. He said something about another product they use for the swirl marks after compounding (not finesse it II). They use 3M products too. They take 50% down and dude said he would take 2 more payments. He said he could bring my boat back with no problem. and they will do half a hull side test before i hire them.
So, should i remove the stripes before i hire them? will everything match if they do their job right? or should i replace them before they start?
