Remove Jabsco head & tank & replace w/porta-portable?

I have a Jabsco head & tank & I am thinking of replacing it with a portable self-contained head. We don't expect to do any long range cruising on our Catalina 25 and the head just seems to be a pain in the butt. It needs at least a rebuild of the gaskets and then visits to pump-out facilities when it's used. Any opinions?

This is a decision only you can make based on how you use your boat, distance to pump-out station, distance you have to carry the full bottom portion of the porta-potty, etc.

That being said, my previous boat (O'Day 192) had a porta-potty. My current boat (Capri 26) has a Groco head and holding tank. Personally, I wouldn't go back to a porta-potty for any reason. Replacing the joker valve once a year and motoring over to the pump out station every week or two beats carrying that porta-potty tank all the way up the dock to the restroom every couple of days. I've never used a Jabsco head but they don't seem to get very high ratings across the general population. When it comes time to replace my Groco it will probably be with a Raritan PHC.

Again, YMMV. If you can get the wife to empty the porta-poty holding tank (as a friend of mine did) then all bets are off.

Before you go to a porta-potty, I would recommend you do a little research on marine composting toilets. Most of the comments I've heard / read have been favorable. Three manufactures that come to mind: Natures Head, Sea Head, Air Head.

Sleep with a porta-potty under your head (about where they are generally stored) for a few nights and then get back to us. Take one home and keep it in the living room.

Been there, done that.

keep in mind that in some jurisdictions it is simply illegal to have a portable toilet on board (you can have a porta-potty, but it has to be fixed to the boat and connected to a pump out hose/port).

Btw. we moved to a bigger boat to have a decent head (instead of the porta-potty).

Takes a stronger man than I to empty a potta-potty, have you heard the expression "That would Gag a vulture off a gut wagon".
Replace the head with a Raritan and hoses with odor safe hose, you'll be much happier and you won't devalue your boat.

If you get a portapotie, do not buy a cheap one. The pump mechanism on a low end unit can be as troublesome as the leaky pump on a marine head. Pat

And one last thing.
Check with your marina, some do not even allow carrying and emptying in the restroom.
I suppose, some mess happened, beuarkkk!!!!
