I have a 27'1985 Catalina. I'm going to do a refit and I'am thinking of pulling the engine out because it leaks a little oil. The engine runs fine and only leaks about a half a Qt.a summer. Its comming from the back port side. It doesn't seem to be the pan. I need to know if anyone has done this before. Its a Universal 18 Diesel. Thanks for the help

Remove Engine

Pat, Is this just a bit drastic for a little oil leak? I have the same boat and engine that you have, and have the same oil leak. A little oil absorbant pad below the engine solved my problem. I felt that the M18 was a much too reliable engine to do away with, just because of a little oil. Paul S/V Second Star '85 C27 TR

Thanks Paul

Thanks Paul for the reply. I do the same thing with the absorbant pads. The engine has about 300 Hrs. on it so I was thinking maybe its time to pull it and have a mechanic go over it. The boats going to have a delayed launch this year so I can do some other things to it.

Diesel

Assuming your diesel has been maintained in a reasonable manner, at 300 hours it's hardly broken in, much less in need of rebuild. Diesels are tough engines that need to be worked hard. I agree with Paul do the annual maintenance, and keep sailing.
